Abstract:
A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2022 to August 2023 with the objective of
assessing the major challenges of the artificial insemination service in urban and peri-urban
areas of Debre Berhan. In this survey, a structured questionnaire was used, and 120 (AI) us-
ers and 7 (AIT) were interviewed. According to the study results, 57.14% of urban and
59.38% of peri-urban households didn’t get consistent and regular AI service in the study ar-
ea. 57.14 % and 45.31% of urban and peri-urban AI users were not satisfied by artificial in-
semination service delivered in the area, respectively, while the rest of the respondents
(42.86% and 54.69%) were satisfied with the artificial insemination service in urban and peri-
urban areas respectively. There was no statistically significant difference of AI users’ satisfac-
tion among the urban and peri-urban study areas (P > 0.05). In urban and peri-urban areas,
respectively, important constraints include 48.21% and 34.37% conception failures, 5.36%
and 10.94% AIT unavailability, 37.5% and 15.6% dystocia, or death of the embryo, and
8.93% and 39.06% input unavailability. The results of this study, urban and peri-urban AI us-
ers were unsatisfied with the overall service and there were interruptions in the service on
weekends and holidays. The major constraints of AI services in the study area include concep-
tion failure, the unavailability of AITs, dystocia, and shortage of inputs. Artificial insemination
users were willing to pay a service charge to the service provider to get consistent and sus-
tainable artificial insemination services. From the above results, responsible bodies should
give attention to AI services and additional AITs should be trained in proportion to the de-
mand of the community for the service.
