Abstract:
Background: Hypertension is a common public health problem and the leading cause of other
cardiovascular diseases and deaths among patients with diabetes worldwide. Now a day’s Diabetes
mellitus and hypertension have become the two common comorbidities in Africa due to lifestyle
changes. There is limited evidence on determinants of hypertension among patients with diabetes.
Objectives: To assess the determinants of hypertension among adult patient with diabetes millets in
Debre Berhan Comprehensive Specialized hospital north east Ethiopia 2022.
Methods: An Institution-based unmatched case-control study was conducted among 450 diabetic
patients at Debre Berhan Comprehensive Specialized hospital. The data collection period was from
May to June 2022. Systematic random sampling technique was used.
Data were collected using pretested structured questionnaire, interviewing patients and reviewing their
chart. Data were entered into Epi-Data version 4.6.0 and it was analyzed using SPSS version 25.
Bivariable logistic regression was fitted and those variables which had a p-value <0.25 were entered
into the multivariable analysis. Model fitness was checked by Hosmer and Lemeshow goodness of fit
test which is 0.4. Lastly, variables with p-value<0.05 in multivariable analysis were considered
statically significant.
Results: A total of 450 participants were involved in this study with 100% response rate. Age greater
than 50years [AOR=7.79; 95% CI:2.27, 26.72], being male [AOR=1.84; 95% CI: 1.02,3.31], urban
residents [AOR=4.37; 95% CI:2.27,8.41], duration since diagnosis with diabetes [AOR=2.65; 95% CI:
1.39,5.06], co morbidity [AOR=1.96; 95% CI: 1.04,3.68], and Type II diabetes [AOR=3.44; 95% CI:
1.58,7.49] were found to be the determinants of hypertension among patients with diabetes.
Conclusion and Recommendation: This research concludes that age >50 years, being male, urban
residence, ≥5years duration with diabetes since diagnosis, comorbidity and a patient with type two
diabetes mellitus were found to be the determinants of hypertension among patients with diabetes.
Health care providers better to do on co morbidity management of diabetes patients.
