Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to find out factors affecting learners’ speaking practice at general secondary and preparatory school with a special reference to grade 12 students. Both quantitative and qualitative methods of research were used for the study. The researcher employed a survey research method. The required data were collected from three English teachers and seventy-five grade twelve students of Millennium General Secondary and preparatory School. Sample students were chosen with simple random sampling technique whereas the teachers were chosen using purposive sampling. The researcher used questionnaire and classroom observation to collect information. Descriptive statistics such as percentage and frequency were utilized in analyzing the data obtained through the questionnaires while the observations were analyzed qualitatively in words. The result of the analysis indicated that psychological factors such as anxiety, feeling of worry about making mistakes and fear of criticism are typical factors which affect the students’ speaking practice in the classroom. The findings also showed that social factors such as reaction of listeners and their support influenced the learners’ speaking practice especially outside the classroom. Finally, the researcher recommended that teachers should create a relaxed and motivating atmosphere in order to decrease/ minimize the effects of psychological factors. They should also give chances for students to speak and assess their improvement frequently. It is also suggested that teachers should give the required attention for speaking skill. On the learners’ side, the researcher suggested that they should know that making mistakes is natural and a way of learning. They should also use every chance they get to practice speaking in the class and outside.
