Abstract:
The main purpose of this study is to explore the role of Shimgelena as indigenous institutions of conflict resolution among the people of Gudo Beret. This study has employed a qualitative exploratory research method to meet its objectives. To achieve its objectives, the study collected primary data from different informants in Gudo Beret by employing qualitative data collection techniques as an interview, focus group discussions and observation. A total number of 34 informants were participated in the study. The secondary data sources were obtained from published and unpublished documents of the local government; such as annual reports, and journals. The finding of the study shows that the traditional conflict resolution mechanism is one of the systems to resolve conflict in Gudo Beret. The study also came up with the main causes of conflict, and the traditional system to resolve conflicts through Shimgelena. The main factors that initiate the people of Gudo Beret for conflict are family related quarrel, alcoholism, adultery, abduction, theft, denial of agreement, insulting, murder and revenge for it. This research also indicates the parameter for the selection of a person for Shimgelena in the study areas. It has also tried to show the relation between Shimgelena and the formal justice system in resolving conflicts and maintaining the community’s peace and stability. Thus, Shimgelena plays a vital role in resolving conflicts. So as to improve the role of shimgelena for conflict resolution in the study area, providing legal recognition, and attitude change were some suggested possible recommendations to the concerned bodies.
