Abstract:
Background: Breast Self-Examination is the recommended method for screening and early detec tion of breast cancer especially in developing countries. However, the practice of breast self examination was low and varies in different Ethiopian countries.
Objective: To determine magnitude of breast self-examination practice and associated factors
among Reproductive age women living Bassona-worana Woreda, North shoa, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted from Jun 8 to July 9, 2022
with a total of 421 samples was included in the study. Data were collected by trained data collec tors through a face-to-face interview using pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire. The collected
data was entered in to Epi-Data version 4.6.6 then exported to SPSS version 26 for cleaning coding
and checking analysis. To select the candidate variable binary logistic regression analysis was
done whose p-value of <0.25 entered into multivariable logistic regression. Moreover the model
adequacy would checked using Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test .P value of less than 0.05
at 95% CI were considered as statistically significant association.
Results: A total of 421 respondents participated in the study, of these only 34(11%) of respondents
practiced breast self-examination monthly. Among study participants whose families had history
of breast cancer (AOR; 4.1, 95% CI, 1.4, 11.9) who had good knowledge (AOR; 4.3, 95% CI.1.78,
10.2)- those who had primary level of education(AOR; 0.09,95% CI,0.02,0.5)), and who had breast
feed length <=12 months (AOR;0.14,95%CI,0.03,07) were significantly associated with women’s
breast self-examination.
Conclusion: The practice of breast self-examination is very low, good knowledge, primary level
of education, breast feed length <=12 months and had history of breast cancer were significant as sociated with women’s breast self-examination. Breast self-examination practice should be pro moted by improving awareness and providing special education for women that had low educa tional level.
