Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude of teachers and students towards the practice of listening skill in EFL classes. The researcher employed descriptive survey design to gather quantitative and qualitative data from respondents. The population of the study was 341 grade eight students and 6 EFL teachers. The researcher selected 102 student samples using systematic random sampling. For EFL teachers, the researcher used comprehensive sampling for the questionnaires. For interview and observation, three sample teachers were selected by simple random sampling among the 6 ones. Observation, questionnaires and interview were the main data gathering instruments for this study. The findings of the study reveal that EFL teachers showed positive attitude towards teaching listening skill; however, they practiced the listening lessons activities presented in grade eight EFL textbook rarely. On the other hand, the students showed negative attitude towards learning listening skill. In addition, their practices of listening skill lessons were low. Moreover, teachers’ interview data showed that students and material related factors were the major problems hindering the teaching learning of listening skill lessons in grade 8 EFL classes. Having said this, the present study needs to be carried with large sample areas and comprehensive samples because the sample areas and the sample sizes were to small to generalize an overall conclusion applying to all primary schools EFL classes.
