Abstract:
The study was conducted in 2020 with the objective of determining the sources, quantity and
quality of wastewater generated in Debre Berhan city and impacts to Beressa river. Wastewater
generation was assumed as 80% of the city water consumption which is the average value of the
estimated relationships between water consumption and wastewater generation. Acquiescent to
the above estimation, Debre Berhan city wastewater generation capacity of 2020 G.C is about
1,331,534 𝑚3 per annum and private or residential were found the higher quantity sources of
wastewater in Debre Berhan city. Samples were taken from different places of Debre Berhan City
such as; Baressa river (at the inlet to the city and leaving the city), leakages from condominiums,
garage, Debre Berhan University effluent, residential and Debre Berhan city slaughter house, and
characterized using different parameters. Accordingly, Alkalinity, Acidity, Sulfate ion, COD,
BOD, TDS, TSS, TN and TP of the collected samples have been analyzed and observed as it had a
higher contribution for polluting the environment, surface water of Debre Berhan city such as
Beressa river and also decrease the aesthetical value of the city.
